Musicians, despite their presence in my childhood, whose death will not compel me to
immediately download their catalog – or at least, their greatest hits – to which I’ll listen to
religiously for about a week:
Janet Jackson
Paula Abdul
Any of the Eagles
Boyz II Men
On the contrary: these people I almost consider a friend, and their death may even compel me to actually purchase music:
Dolly Parton
George Strait
Jim James of My Morning Jacket
Kelly Clarkson
Garth Brooks
Ryan Adams
Robyn
Sufjan Stevens
Regina or Win from Arcade Fire
I feel almost jinxed talking about this.
A few years ago, S and I came home from a reading by Ann Lamottt, and I mentioned to him that Kurt Vonnegut was his version of my Ann Lamott. The next morning I opened cnn.com to see that he died. Saturday night, while out to dinner, a bunch of us segued from talking about makeup into taking about Whitney Houston…and it wasn’t an hour later that we saw the news of her passing. Should I just not mention any likeable celebrities, for fear of making it three?
