My step-brother-in-law (aka, my mom’s boyfriend’s daughter’s husband) loves the word “phenomenal.” LOVES. IT. And, you’d be amazed at what he finds phenomenal. His preferences in life makes his favorite adjective so much more colorful. All you can eat prime rib and crab legs? That would be phenomenal. “King of Queens”? Yep, phenomenal. Their progressive dinner at church? Likely. The movie “Click”? Well, it didn’t get the word, but it did get a thumbs up, have a good lesson, AND it brought a tear to his eye, so let’s just deem it: phenomenal. Can you guess what the new word bandied about in our house is?

The question of the day was a nerdboy-pleasing one: Kathryn, do you know if all Star Wars movies come in a set? Not bad, as far as these questions go. But I did enjoy the kicker after I encouraged her to check out the ol’ innernets: “Is Amazon easy? I’ve never used it.” 2006, almost 2007. Good lord. No money for Bezos from that chick!

Yesterday I brough some soup and other things to Hannah’s for their dinner. (FYI, Hannah is our church administrator whose son died of an OD last Saturday.) I don’t know Hannah well at all, and I doubt that we will ever be great friends. That being said, I was at her house for an hour and half and heard more about Graeme (her son) than I’ll ever know what to do with. To be standing in someone’s kitchen, hugging a person you barely know while she cries over her dead son…I am proud to be part of a church where we do such things, and I have been at the porch for years now, but it still stuns me sometimes that this is what we do and who we are. It’s amazing and weird and shell-shocking and ineffable, all at the same time.

Deep breath.

So, did you do any shopping? I tore up H&M for my neice. I wanted to visit Aeropostale – they have cute stuff, and everything was (is?) 50% off, but I took 3 steps in the store, looked around, and left. It was an absolute mess, and the thought of pawing through filmy sweaters that had been heavily fondled over 2 days just skeeved me out.

So, the NYT has their 100 books of the year list out. On the fiction list, I get one half-tic mark: I started “Black Swan Green.” That’s it. On the non-fiction list, I can fully tic (tick?) off 4. And that is that. Four. Pathetic. I am looking forward to telling you all about my favorites of the year, but I have weeks left to read before then.

It’s going to be a slow week – I have a paper to write for the first time since we worried about y2k.

the plot includes cannibalism, a barn with a lot of farm tools, and at least 1 naked horseback riding scene

I don’t know about you, but I am already tired of turkey dinner. We had round 2 tonight, and to be honest I was ready to throw in the towel last night before I even finished round 1. Part of it has to do with the fact that one of Mr. S’ company’s clients sent 2 smoked turkeys as a gift, and one night this week he brought some home to make soup. Smoked turkey is good, but I think my digestive system is getting weaker lately and I couldn’t eat much…but even worse was the smell. Our whole house smelled for days. But, that did inspire Mr. S and I to plan out a whole plot for a movie called “Smokehouse,” which would, naturally, star Patrick Swayze because it would be the sequel to “Roadhouse.” The washed-up bar band would be led by Johnny Lang, and either Sam Shepherd or Kris Kristofferson would be the wizened wise old sage. I don’t know who the femme fetale would be… Nicollet Sheridan? Ellen Barkin?

We didn’t shop today, but I am thinking of hitting the MOA tomorrow. I know, I’m crazy. But the deals are so good! Driving home from my mom’s at 9 PM on Thursday, we saw a line forming at the Maplewood Best Buy. Now that is nutz.

There is a kickass job posted at Bethel right now: to help run chapel. Planning, meeting, speaking…all right up my alley. They are asking for someone who has a MA, though…but that’s the least of the issue. Giving up booze entirely is one thing; the fact that I don’t identify myself as an evangelical is another. And the music would drive me up a wall. (Not to mention that I described the job 5 lines ago as “kickass.”)

Didja wish Cory a happy bday? It’s today.

I finally got in Fun Sisters today, and wow. I am totally going back tomorrow. It’s like Chinatown on Nicollet Avenue. Walls and walls of knockoff purses, sunglasses, and jewelry. Yes, please. Mr. S and I both thought it was like a “Grandma Patina;” I am delighted to be wrong.

These few paragraphs of personal stuff is more than I’ve written since I’ve had this blog on WordPress. I don’t know when it will happen again.
